You had a liposuction procedure to help remove stubborn fat and give you the curves you desire. However, here you are after the procedure looking all lumpy and bumpy. Is this normal after liposuction? Are you destined to have lumps after liposuction?
Have no fear — you are not stuck with these new lumpy and bumpy contours.
Lumps and Bumps are Common after Liposuction
Lumps after liposuction are common but usually resolve during the first few months after recovery.
Lumps after liposuction are common, especially in older patients and those with less skin elasticity. When you have liposuction, the cannula creates tunnels underneath the skin. These spaces fill with bodily fluids and can increase swelling. This swelling and fluid accumulation can contribute to the lumpy and bumpy areas underneath your skin.
In addition, localized hematomas (blood underneath the skin) can create lumps as well. One other common cause of lumps is residual fat that remains after surgery. However, these typically settle down and adjust.
Proper Aftercare Helps Reduce and Eliminate the Lumps
Reducing your risk of developing lumps after liposuction begins with your aftercare. Dr. Martin will likely prescribe a compression garment for you to wear after the procedure. You should wear this garment all the time for the first two weeks and during the day for the third and fourth week, or as directed by Dr. Martin.
This garment helps reduce swelling, fluid buildup and bruising. Wearing the garment helps reduce the formation of lumps during liposuction recovery.
If lumps and bumps do develop, chances are they will diminish over time as your body heals. If they remain after a few months, there are some things that help minimize and eliminate the bumps. Some options can include massage, such as manual lymphatic drainage therapy, and laser skin tightening.
