Making the decision to have breast augmentation is a very personal one. But once you decide you want to enhance your breasts, your next decision focuses on timing and what you have planned for your future.
While breast augmentation is a safe procedure and does not affect your ability to get pregnant, it can affect breastfeeding. In addition, pregnancy hormones and breastfeeding will cause changes to your breasts, whether you have breast implants or not.
Do you plan to have children in the near future? Is starting a family an option for you down the road? How will these plans affect your breast augmentation decision?
Breast Augmentation is Safe for Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
If you are considering a breast augmentation before pregnancy, you can rest assured that breast augmentation will have no impact on your fertility or the health of your baby during pregnancy. Breast augmentation can, however, impact breastfeeding, depending on the incisions used for your augmentation.
If you plan on having children after a breast augmentation, you need to discuss this with your surgeon so necessary incision changes can be made. Certain incisions used for breast augmentation can cut breast glandular tissue, which can interfere with milk production and predispose you to mastitis when breastfeeding.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Can Change the Look of Your Breasts
During pregnancy, hormonal changes in your body affect your breasts. Your breasts are made up of both fatty and glandular tissue, which will expand and grow as your baby does. If you decide to breastfeed, milk production, as well as breastfeeding, will affect the size and shape of your breasts.
While many women with breast implants remain happy with their results even after pregnancy, there is a chance that the changes to your breasts will leave you with a deflated or sagging appearance. In many cases, women will then opt for a breast lift or even breast revision surgery.
The decision to have a breast augmentation before or after pregnancy is up to you. If you want to enhance your breasts long before pregnancy, your choice will not impact your ability to have children. However, if the idea of revision surgery is not for you, waiting until after your family is complete may be your best option.
