Can I benefit from breast implants?
This is a very personal question and the answer will vary from woman to woman. If you are unhappy with the size, shape or look of your breasts, breast augmentation may be a good option. Dr. Martin will discuss your goals, one on one, during your first consultation and perform a physical examination before providing his recommendations. A certain breast implant size or type may be your best option. Candidates for breast enhancement surgery need to have reasonable expectations about what the procedure can achieve and should be healthy overall.
How can I get a naturally larger look with breast augmentation?
It is very common these days for women to want an augmentation result that does not appear “fake” or obvious. If you are looking to achieve a very naturally proportioned appearance through breast implant surgery, you are not alone. Dr. Martin offers a customized approach to breast enlargement that focuses on your particular goals. This is where his eye for detail and the knowledge he has gained from experience plays a part. Different implant sizes and the placement of them will affect how your breasts look after surgery. Dr. Martin can walk you through your options from the very beginning so that you can achieve your surgery goals, whatever they may be.
My breasts are small and sagging. What can I do?
Weight loss, pregnancy and aging are all causes of sagging breasts, also known as ptosis. The appearance of very minor sagging may be improved just through the placement of breast implants, this can help fill the sagging tissue and give you a fuller look that you may have had before. To more fully address breast size, shape or position, breast augmentation is often combined with a breast lift, particularly for women who have had children and/or nursed. In most cases when sagging or ptosis is worse, a breast lift will provide a better cosmetic outcome. Without proper correction, adding weight to the breasts through breast implants will only make existing breast sagging more noticeable over time Dr. Martin can bring the breasts back to a more natural position with this procedure, also known as a mastopexy.
Most women typically qualify for the lollipop incision which is also Dr. Martin’s preferred technique. The ‘lollipop’ incision utilizes minimal incisions and provides excellent results. Dr. Martin makes an incision around the areola with a vertical position from the areola to the breast crease. The flaps are pulled back and excess skin is removed and pulled tight so that the nipple is repositioned higher.
How will my implants be inserted?
Dr. Martin prefers the inframammary incision (within the crease below the breast where it meets the chest wall) for both silicone and saline breast implants . This incision method involves a small 4 to 5 cm incision that provides him with direct access to the area where the implant will be placed and maximizes the potential for nursing following the procedure. With proper post-surgical care the scars will fade and be practically invisible. If breast augmentation is being combined with a breast lift, an additional incision running from the nipple to the base of the breast is needed to achieve the tightening and lifting of breast tissue. Dr. Martin will discuss the scar pattern pertaining to your procedure in more depth at your initial visit. He is happy to talk with you about other incision options if you are a good candidate.
How much does breast augmentation cost?
There is no “standard” price for all breast augmentations we perform, because every procedure is customized to each individual patient’s needs. The cost of your breast enlargement will depend on several factors, including the type of implant you select and whether or not you are having other cosmetic procedures as part of the surgery. Check out our page on breast augmentation pricing and financing for more specifics about breast implant surgery cost and to learn about the financing options we offer that can make your surgery more affordable.
What is recovery like?
Dr. Martin will perform your breast augmentation procedure in our own state of the art outpatient surgery suite. You are able to return home the same day as your surgery to begin your recovery. We will provide you with a detailed list of post-op instructions and frequently asked questions sheet, along with reminders on how to take your post-op medications after surgery. Plan to take it easy for several days, although we will tell you to make sure and stay active during your recovery, it is important to get plenty of rest, and have friends and family help you around the house. You should be ready to return to work in about a week and resume strenuous exercise a few weeks later. Please see our breast augmentation recovery info for more specifics.
What are the risks?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure and like any surgery, there are risks and complications associated with it. Hundreds of thousands of women in the U.S. have breast augmentation surgery each year, and they are happy with their results, with minimal to no complications. But it is important to understand the risks beforehand so that you make an informed decision. Possible complications following breast augmentation include a negative reaction to anesthesia, bleeding or infection, excessive scar tissue formation (known as capsular contracture) and implant malposition. Dr. Martin will review a complete set of risks during your private breast augmentation surgery consultation. Each of these risks and complications are outlined in your surgical packet and implant booklets that you are given when you schedule your appointment for surgery. Our staff will be happy to go into greater detail and provide you with as much information as you need to feel comfortable with your decision.
