Choosing a Plastic Surgeon? Here’s Why Board Certification Counts

11/23/2023

If you are considering a plastic surgery procedure, such as a tummy tuck or breast augmentation, choosing the right surgeon for your procedure is likely the most important step. While you want to find a surgeon you are comfortable with and who has experience with the procedure you are choosing, you have likely heard the term board-certified mentioned in your research. But what is a board-certified plastic surgeon and does board certification really make a difference when it comes to choosing a plastic surgeon?

Why Qualifications Matter in Elective Healthcare

When you have health concerns and your primary physician refers you to a cardiologist, for example, chances are you don’t give their choice a second thought. You assume that your provider has confidence in the specialist’s ability to provide care and that, if your insurance company covers the provider, they have to be properly qualified, right?

While you may ask your healthcare provider for a referral to a cosmetic plastic surgeon, they might not be the best source of an opinion. The fact is that cosmetic procedures are elective, and the unfortunate reality is that any medical doctor can call themselves a “cosmetic surgeon” and perform these procedures. So you need to ask more questions about qualifications and experience.

What Does Board Certification Mean?

To become board certified in plastic surgery, a doctor must complete specific education and training requirements in the specialty, pass specific exams, and demonstrate mastery. In the case of plastic surgeons and the American Board of Plastic Surgery, board certification means that surgeons complete at least six years or surgical training after medical school, including at least three years in plastic surgery. In addition, they must pass comprehensive oral and written exams as well as commit to regular continuing education in their field in order to stay up to date on the latest techniques and medical care.

Check Board Certification Carefully

Unfortunately, almost all states allow any licensed physician to perform cosmetic surgery, even without experience or specialized training. Do you really want someone trained in dermatology, gynecology or family medicine performing a cosmetic procedure for you? Without the specialized training that accompanies board certification in plastic surgery, you may not be getting the best possible care and results. This is why choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon is so important.

If you are considering a surgical procedure, Dr. Scot Martin is a board-certified plastic surgeon and brings with him years of specialized training and experience. Call 575-521-7111 today to schedule a consultation and learn how Dr. Martin can help you achieve your plastic surgery goals.

It's been over an year since I had my breasts implant surgery and I have no other to say that everything was amazing, still feel so satisfied and happy with the result, my skin has healed so well that I can barely say there was a cut! This surgery has changed my life, I'm in love with the new result! I followed the surgeon advice about the size, and is been the best! The proceeding was very organized, fast, the follow up was always scheduled well, the pain to me was pretty fine to handle, didn't even need all the meds he prescribed. First 3 days were harder but now who's got some awesome look? I love them ! The stuff and the environment is amazing! I recommend him! I've done some deep research about this doctor before I left my body on his hands! As an european, I claim we won't let everyone to touch our manicure or hairstylist to make our hair done! Imagine for a plastic surgery how much trust I needed making sure before, that is worthy! He's got many years of experience and an exemplary work ! He deserves 10 stars!

I can not express how much I love this surgeon and his staff. I had a breast lift and reduction done. I had 385cc implants from a previous surgery and exchanged them for 290cc, i reduced them by 100cc. My incisions are super thin like thread, very light. He only uses dissolvable stitches so no coming back to get anything taken off and no drains. The less tugging and pain the better! My nipples are beautiful, i was left with unattractive scars from a previous surgeon & dr Martin corrected them. I have perky, firm breast that fit my tiny frame. He knows exactly what your body is built for, he knows exactly how firm , how round or how much fullness needs to be up top. I’m so happy. I just want to add that it’s not just the work that gets done, it’s the genuine care the staff and Dr Martin provide. They provide the reassurance you need the entire time. They’re readily available for any emergency or concern. Surgery is quick and painless. The anesthesiologist knows her stuff, she’s good. I’m tiny 105lbs 4’11, I always get so scared because I’m so small but you’re in good hands. I had to go under twice because freak accident I did something to my left breast the first night, I had blood leaking which led to a small hematoma. The staff or Dr Martin didn’t cease contact with me or disappear, consistently calling or texting me to advise me, brought me back in immediately and put me in immediate surgery. Cleaned me up and had a new implant put in. None of my work was compromised. They genuinely cared about my well being, if I was in any pain, about my concern for the scars. I felt taken care of and wasn’t left anxious. I truly wish I had come to Dr Martin the first time I had breast implants put in. I made the mistake of going with a different surgeon and I paid the price financially, physically, mentally. 7 years later I corrected it. Do yourself the favor. You’ll be happy you had your surgery with Dr Martin. Don’t worry you’re given good pain meds after the surgery so you’re not in pain. They actually work too. Nicole the RN in the office is a living gem. She will be with you till your last check up. Nothing is ridiculous or too small to ask. I live in Florida, traveled to las cruces so Dr Martin could do my surgery. I was actually sad to leave this office, wish they were in Florida! Good luck ladies! Book your surgery ASAP! you love your body ♥️
