If large breasts have created back pain or made it difficult to fit properly in the clothes you want, chances are you have considered a breast reduction. But after looking at many before and after pictures, are you worried that you won’t get the results you want or end up with boxy-looking breasts? While this can be a common result associated with breast reductions, there are things that you and your surgeon can do to avoid this result and give you the natural, smaller breasts you are looking for.
What Causes the Boxy Appearance?
While there are a variety of excision patterns your surgeon can decide on for your breast reduction, the most commo n is the Wise pattern that involves an incision along the breast crease, known as the inframammary fold, a vertical incision from the fold up to the areola and then an incision around the areola. Known as an anchor, or inverted “T,” this method works best for those with large breasts, excess skin, and poor skin quality. However, this method requires the maximal tightness of closure to hit right between the inframammary fold and the nipple, often resulting in a square and boxy appearance developing during your breast reduction recovery.
How to Avoid Boxy Looking Breast after a Breast Reduction
The good news is there are things your surgeon can do to avoid boxy-looking breasts. At the end of your procedure, your surgeon can simply adjust you to an upright position and adjust the suturing as needed to provide a more natural fall of the breast tissue, avoiding the boxy appearance. It is important to talk with your surgeon about how they work to avoid a boxy appearance. Examine before and after photos, closely examining the ones that are similar to your current breast volume and your desired results.
If you are considering a breast reduction and are concerned about your final results and the possibility of boxy-looking breasts, Dr. Scot Martin and his team are here to answer your questions and develop a surgical plan that will give you the results you desire, without the boxy appearance.
