He attended the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas before continuing a five-year general surgery residency at the University of Oklahoma. During this residency he was a part of surgical research at Johns Hopkins Hospital where he wrote numerous articles and book chapters. For his plastic surgery residency, Dr. Martin worked under the direction of world-renowned surgeon Dr. Luis O. Vasconez, who is responsible for the development of many of the surgical techniques now used in a variety of different plastic surgical procedures.

Dr. Vasconez was so impressed with Dr. Martin that he offered him the opportunity to stay on staff and teach future plastic surgeons, which he did before returning to his hometown area to open his own practice and serve the members of his community as a board-certified breast augmentation specialist.
